Old McDonald as sung by Gracie on the way home today:
Old McDonald had a moo.
E-I-E-I-O
It's a moo moo there.
It's a moo moo there.
E-I-E-I-O. Moo.
On the farm there is a moo.
It's a moo moo there.
And .... ummm ... a PIG!
E-I-E-I-O
It's a moo moo, no oink oink there.
An oink oink there.
Old McDonald had an oink.
E-I-E-I-O
Yea!

Again. Again. Again. Again.....
I never really understood children’s music.
As a childless adult, I mocked it. As a parent, I mocked the parents who gave in. I really did feel superior. Gracie is happy listening to Jason Mraz and Pink, thank you very much. We do not need children’s CD’s.
Then she got a little older and the Wheels on the Bus came into focus. OK, whatever, I can sing a few rounds of this. It’s not so bad.
Then she learned more songs. And started getting mad when I screwed up the words. And wanted me to sing for the entire 45 minute car ride.

So I caved. You knew this was coming though, that I become one of them. One of the parent’s I had always mocked. The person who is blaring the Itsy Bitsy Spider when you pull up next to them at the stoplight. You can judge, it’s OK. I expect it.
It’s taken me – oh, a few months – to get up the gumption and admit that we own a children’s CD. So here is it, full out there. I present the Toddler Tunes.
And do you want to know why I’m admitting this? Because I’m buying more. Listen, I need more. I’m starting to get a nervous twitch from the repetition, and frankly, I am tired of listening to Gracie complain everyday that the damn CD doesn’t have Twinkle Twinkle on it.
I love my daughter, but I hate what I’ve become.

Dancin' Machine
Music and art is an emphasised standard for Gracie at daycare. Matt and I would like to take more credit for her growing love of dance and art and different from the everyday, but I know I have her teachers to thank.
Despite the credit going to us, spontaneous dance parties have become standard in our house. When Gracie was in inconsolable wailing newborn, two songs would calm her down. Matt bobbing like a mad-man to Peanut Butter Jelly Time with her and gently rocking while forcefully crooning (in Italian I might add) Con Te PartirĂ² by Andrea Bocelli. I know, it was in fact a war of two worlds.

Then the wild swinging starts .....

These days, we moved onto more - umm - mainstream pop songs. Particularly Matt's pick of Sexy Back and Gracie's pick of Single Ladies. I know, but dude, she knows the words. She sings along. It's not like I've played these songs a million times in repeat. She just likes them and at least Single Ladies have a semi positive message.
So last night there was a Timberlake/Beyonce dace party. I finally took some good pictures.
It starts with manic Blues Brother's esqe dancing and stomping.....

Then the wild swinging starts .....

Followed by rhythm drums being pounding out on old plastic containers absconded from the kitchen ....

Finally, the collapse.

Because, after two songs at that pace you know you'd want to collapse too.
Welcome to our world. Won't you come on in?

Taking It Back
Growing up, it was rare to see my dad enjoying himself. It was always an odd moment when we all laughed together as a family. Except, EXCEPT when he would turn on the radio. Then he was usually all smiles. Huh, now I'm wondering why music wasn't ALWAYS on...
Different bloodlines, but the tradition is now being passed down to Gracie. Minus the unhappy father who drinks nasty Busch beer part. Matt is always full of love, smiles and laughter and mainly sticks to mellow red wine. (Trust me, HUGE difference.)
Matt's song? Justin Timberlake "SexyBack". Yeah, I know.
So what do you do when you have a ramped up one year old who is half naked and doesn't want to go to bed? How about a dance fest?
It's a beautiful thing to have and hold memories of dancing with your daddy. Mine are clouded. Grace's will be surrounded with sunshine ray and radiant memories of dips, twirls, foot
stomping, laughter and love.

Anyway, the best? When Alicia Bridges "I Love the Night Life" came on. He would jump out of the kitchen chair and wiggle his butt back and forth with index fingers pointing in the direction of his motion. Very much like Steve Martin in the SNL Czech Brothers bits. Except I don't think Dad was performing a comedic routine. That is just the way he danced. That's still the way he dances.

All Through the Town
I'm slowly, but surely, becoming what I hate.
OK, hate is a little bit dramatic.
What I've always mocked.
Even after Grace was born, I still stuck by the notion that parents who listen to kiddie music and watch Elmo were suckers. I still believe that, I'm just slowly sinking into the sucker category.
At home the TV is always on. I know, I should have principals against that, but I don't. I like the noise and I'm lazy. However, the TV is on SportsCenter or Style - NOT - kiddie programing.
Monday I broke though. Grace decided that the 3 hour naps she took on Saturday and Sunday meant that she didn't need to sleep on Monday. About 4 hours into the meltdowns I turned on Noggin's Little Bear in the hopes she would at least lay down and snuggle for a few minutes. You know, take a quick break from smacking her head on sharp corners. We made it through one 15 minute episode. Then she was done.
The kiddie music though, oh, I have definitely failed that one.
No, we don't listen to CD's really. At least not kiddie ones. In a pinch, I turn on the CD with her ever present favorite song, I'm Yours. (Yeah, it quickly over took Pink.)
But the singing. The singing!
The child cannot get enough of The Wheels on the Bus. This is amplified by the sudden connection of what a bus is AND the fact that we pass 40 of them on the way to work. (The hazard of working at the junction of two counties and a heavy Metrobus route.)
So now, NOW, we HAVE TO, sing The Wheels on the Bus for at least half an hour each way. If nothing else, there is a quick declaration of 'All two toouwwwm.'
And I comply.
How can I not? It makes her so happy, which makes me happy.
Like I said, I am officially a sucker.

Tis the Season
This will be Gracie's first real holiday season.
Sure, she was here last year, but she was still brand new and not very fun.
I recall screaming 10 minutes into the Thanksgiving meal I had spend hours preparing and days obsessing over. The complaint is only about the screaming though. I L-O-V-E the cooking and obsessing part of Thanksgiving.
I also recall the lump of 2 month old baby that didn't enjoy Christmas morning either. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say there was crying involved that morning too. Despite our efforts to crinkle paper, decorate her with bows and then drown out the cries with mimosas.
This year will be different though. In fact, it already is.
Much like retail stores, my satellite radio is moving up the start of Christmas too. Sure, they have a million stations so it makes absolute sense, but I will still surprised when an alert came up that my favorite Christmas song was playing somewhere in the box. The music, much like the decorations are supposed to start the day after Thanksgiving. Not weeks before.
Anyway ...
This has turned out to be a wonderful thing for me. Why? Grace seems to L-O-V-E Christmas music. You know, jingle bells and all make for great head bobbing. So far, Sleigh Ride is her favorite. Lots and lots of bells.
So this year's holiday season is filled with hope.
Thanksgiving will be served during the happiest part of the day, 3 pm-ish(right after her nap). I know she is a fan of yams, so they will only be better with butter and brown sugar. Cranberries will be a hit with their sweet squishability. Turkey will be tasted and shared with the dog.
It's a win-win for everyone. She will be happy, Lil' Rick will be happy, I will be happy and (most importantly) there WILL BE NO CRYING.
Here me kid?

Na Na Na
I am not looking forward to the days of children’s music. You know, The Wheels on the Bus, If Your Happy and You Know It and songs sung in Chipmunk voices. EVERYONE I know that has kids has those damn CD's in their car. EVERYONE.
I know it will be my time soon too, but for now, we flip through adult channels. I lean towards the Alt. Rock, while Gracie is more of a Top 40’s girl.
Her favorite song right now? Pink, So What.
Go figure.
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na Na Na
I guess I just lost my husband
I don't know where he went
So I'm gonna drink my money
I'm not gonna pay his rent (Nope)
I got a brand new attitude
And I'm gonna wear it tonight
I wanna get in trouble
I wanna start a fight
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
I wanna start a fight
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
I wanna start a fight
So so what?
I'm still a rock star
I got my rock moves
And I don't need you …..
That’s all of the lyrics that I copied because the head bob stops after the And I don’t need you line. I'm thinking when she realizes the initial NaNaNa's are over she looses interest until they start again.
It’s the strangest thing.
Although it's not much stranger than these being the lyrics of the favorite song of a 12 month old kid either.
Whatever. The reaction is so funny I don’t even care.
It is like she turns into her own little 80’s hair band with the head bob. Sure, she likes other songs too, but it’s just not the same.
She bobs and I giggle. All while trying to pay attention to those weaving around me, out of the corner of my eye, so I can watch her in the rear view mirror.
Well, I guess I have already been warned that Gracie is a fighter…
